TOEFL Score 2026: The New Scoring System Explained
Updated for the January 2026 TOEFL iBT format · 5 min read
The TOEFL 2026 scoring system changed completely on January 21, 2026. The old 0–30 per section scale is gone. The new system uses a 1–6 scale aligned with the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), making scores easier to understand internationally.
How the New Score Scale Works
Each of the four sections — Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking — is scored from 1 to 6 in half-point increments (1.0, 1.5, 2.0 ... 6.0). Your overall score is the average of all four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band.
| Score | CEFR Level | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 6.0 | C2 | Mastery — near-native proficiency |
| 5.0–5.5 | C1 | Advanced — strong academic English |
| 4.0–4.5 | B2 | Upper Intermediate — university ready |
| 3.0–3.5 | B1 | Intermediate — needs development |
| 1.0–2.5 | A1–A2 | Elementary — significant gaps |
What Score Do Universities Require?
- Top universities (Harvard, MIT, Oxford): typically 5.0 or above
- Strong research universities: typically 4.5 overall
- Most universities: typically 4.0 overall
- Community colleges / pathway programs: typically 3.0–3.5
Always check your specific program's requirements. Many programs also set minimum section scores — you cannot compensate a low Reading score with a high Speaking score.
How the Writing Section is Scored
Writing has three tasks: Build a Sentence (10 questions × 1 point), Write an Email (scored 1–6), and Academic Discussion (scored 1–6). These combine into a single Writing section score on the 1–6 scale.
How Does the New Score Compare to the Old 0–120 Scale?
As a rough guide: a 4.5 on the new scale corresponds approximately to 95–100 on the old scale. A 4.0 corresponds to approximately 80–90. Use official ETS concordance tables for precise conversions.
How to Calculate Your Target Score
Find your target university's requirement, then work backwards. If you need 4.5 overall and your Speaking is strong at 5.5, you need an average of 4.17 on the other three sections — giving you more room on Reading and Writing.
